Overview of Services
Fluorescence, transmission, confocal and two-photon microscopes and cameras available for use by researchers on a fee for use basis. Facility provides training, maintenance, troubleshooting and operator-assisted imaging.
The Fluorescence Microscopy Shared Resource aids basic and physician researchers to image and publish high profile articles that:
- Elucidate cell and molecular mechanisms of cancer, immunologic, infectious, metabolic, neurologic and vascular diseases
- Evaluate therapeutic efficacy in cells and patient samples
- Test new nanotechnologies in cell based assays
- Quantitatively measure changes in tissue morphology and pathology
The Fluorescence Microscopy Shared Resource provides UNM researchers access to state-of-the art instrumentation for multiple fluorescence and transmitted light microscopy techniques.
- Laser scanning microscopes capable of multi-spectral imaging systems enable simultaneous visualization and quantification fluorescent labels
- Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (FLIM) produces an image based on the differences in the excited state decay rate from a fluorescent sample. Thus, FLIM is a fluorescence imaging technique where the contrast is based on the lifetime of individual fluorophores rather than their emission spectra intensity.
- Spinning disk confocal and sensitive digital cameras allow quantitative assessment of cell numbers in tissue sections and imaging of dynamic processes in real time
- Ratiometric imaging allows quantification of real time changes in calcium and other ion concentrations in response to cell signaling
Resource staff offer investigators.
- Expert consultation on experiment design and specimen preparation
- Training
- Imaging for a fee
- Ongoing assistance
